Preparing Your Vehicle for Transport
Whether you’re moving your car, shipping your RV, or transporting your motorcycle, we consider it our precious cargo.
Follow these important steps to ensure that it arrives well at its new home.
Be sure that your vehicle is in a safe condition.
We require the following to safely load and unload your vehicle: • one set of ALL keys for the vehicle; • no less than ¼-tank of gas, but no more than a ½-tank; • at least four inches (4”) of ground clearance; • driver’s side door and window in proper working condition; • battery secure in the mounting bracket; • working brakes, and emergency brake if manual transmission; • no fluid leaks as damage caused will result in additional charges; and • please let us know of any modifications made to your vehicle, such as 4x4 lift kits, lowered suspensions, camper tops, and so on.
Be sure that your vehicle is clean and empty.
A vehicle shipping inspection will be performed at both the origin and destination. You, or your auto transport representative, must be present at both times to confirm and sign the bill of lading and condition report.
In order to perform a quality inspection, • clean your car inside and out so that existing scratches and blemishes can be noted; • disconnect all alarm systems,
and remove the following: • all antennas, unless they can be fully retracted; • unmounted radios, CD or cassette decks, and car phones; • garage door openers, gate openers, and toll tag passes; • personal belongings, with the exception of standard vehicle items, such as a jack and spare tire; • all non-permanent luggage, bike, and ski racks; and • all exterior spare tire, grill, and car covers.
Federal law prohibits the shipment of plants, hazardous materials, and firearms.
ShipMyAuto.com Tip: Be sure that your vehicle is ready for its new home. Prepare your vehicle for the weather and climate in its destination. This may include anything from engine coolant to snow tires. A licensed mechanic will be able to tell you more.
Vehicle Shipping Inspection
Our staff will inspect your vehicle before and after delivery. At ShipMyAuto.com, we strive to provide safe, secure, and worry-free vehicle shipping at a competitive price. We do not expect damages to occur during transport, and they rarely do.
To ensure the best possible customer care and safest vehicle shipment, all of our carriers are required to inspect your vehicle immediately prior to and following transport.
In this way, we know if any damage occurred while en route. If it did, the vehicle inspection and the bill of lading are very important pieces of the insurance claim process.
The bill of lading is like your vehicle shipping receipt. Before accepting your vehicle for transport, our carrier will carefully inspect the vehicle’s exterior and document all pre-existing scratches, dents, dings, and other damage on the bill of lading.
You or your auto transport representative must be present. We encourage you to assist in the inspection process by taking photos from every angle immediately prior to departure. We also recommend that you and the carrier make note of the vehicle’s odometer reading.
You will be required to confirm the condition report by signing the bill of lading. The carrier will give you a copy for your files.
Receiving Your Vehicle Upon Arrival
At the destination point, you or your representative must be present to receive the vehicle from the carrier. Again, take time to carefully inspect the vehicle.
If you find any new scratches, dents, dings, or other damage, please note them on the bill of lading with an exact description. We recommend taking another set of photos at the destination, especially if you discover new damage.
Please note that the odometer reading may have changed slightly due to loading, unloading, storage, and parking. Make note on the bill of lading if the mileage has increased more than nominally.
After the inspection at the destination point, you or your representative will confirm the condition report by signing the bill of lading.
Before and After Vehicle Shipping – What You Need to Know about Pick-Up and Drop-Off

Door-to-door vehicle shipping service When you elect to have our carriers pick-up and drop-off your vehicle at your specified origination and destination, there is no extra driving for you. We’ll bring the transport and the paperwork to you.
Your timeframe will determine a “first available shipping date” to establish the pick-window. According to carrier availability, time of year, and how far in advance the move was scheduled, vehicle pick up usually occurs within one to five (1-5) business days of the first available shipping date.
Our team will advise you of the transit time and when to expect delivery. If you need to guarantee the pick-up or delivery date, please let our customer service agent know. That value-added service is available for most vehicle shipments.
Terminal-to-terminal and port-to-port vehicle shipping service The most cost effective option for vehicle shipment in the contiguous United States often involves you dropping off and picking up your vehicle at one of our 100 terminals in the continental US.
However, we are unable to provide you with transportation after you drop off your vehicle with us. If you live very far from the terminal, it may be more convenient to let us come get it. It may even be less expensive when you consider gas prices and the cost of overnight lodging.
Of course, if you are having a vehicle shipped to Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, or elsewhere overseas, you may still choose our door-to-door or our port-to-port service.
No matter which service you choose, you will need to prepare your vehicle for shipping. You will also need to be present for the vehicle shipping inspection or assign a designee who can sign the bill of lading on your behalf.
